CSC Sweatiest Angel - May 2015

Congratulations - Katy Appleby

Join us in congratulating CrossFit Sixth City's Sweatiest Angel recipient for the month of June 2015 - Katy Appleby!

Sweatiest Angel Award

Each month CSC recognizes someone for their hard work.  The Sweatiest Angel is not someone who works as hard as they can day in and day out, but also receptive to coaching, a great teammate and consistently focused on pursuing their goals.

Question + Answer

How many years have you been doing CrossFit?
Two years in August.

What do you do when you are not at CSC (hobbies, occupation, etc)?
My hobbies include: pretending to be a law student, copious hydration, trying to match my sunglasses to my outfit, and telling stories with too much detail.

When did you realize CrossFit was for you?
When I walked in on my first day of on-ramp and had the same shoes on as Stokes, after watching her bound a bunch of box jumps like she does, I knew I had to try and be just like her.

What is your favorite WOD/movement?
I love to hang out with my best friend Rusty the Kettlebell and do Oly with Coach J and his girls.

What is your LEAST favorite WOD/movement?
Thrusters and running.  Just generally all things cardio.  My motto is to pick up heavy things slowly and not very many times.

One thing you've done at CSC you never thought you would do?
Leave an entire body sweat mark that looked similar to a lobster, and learn how to Olympic weight lift.

What motivates you during a WOD?
I am hugely impacted by the music.  Bad and Slow music = Bad and Slow CrossFit.

What advice would you give someone just starting CrossFit?
Don't get discouraged if you can't do something yet, focus on having good technique the weight will come.  Have as much fun as possible and the members aren't scary, they were new once too.

From The Eyes of a PT - Knees

Introduction   Over the years, we CrossFit coaches have noticed many behavioral trends among our athletes. One of the most common trends we see involves their willingness to take to heart our opinions on building strength, increasing range of motion (mobility) or healthy eating.  We are often seen as experts in these fields thanks to thousands of hours of real world practice and learning.  However, one of the areas that we often get scoffed at is that of injuries, whether they are the nagging or serious variety.  We’ll be the first to admit that we are certainly no experts in this area of health and wellness as we have never received a sports medicine or physical therapy degree, nor practiced as a licensed physical therapist.  Having said that, through the years we have come to develop a pretty good instinct for when athletes are pushing too hard and entering the window of overuse injuries.  Unfortunately, our words of wisdom oft fall on deaf ears. ...
