Sweatiest Angels - January 2017

Congratulations to our dynamic duo, the cool kids of Buffalo, Alexis Derrigo and Lindsay Ponto on being named CSC's Sweatiest Angels! The Sweatiest Angel award is given each month to the CSC athlete who displays significant work ethic, a willingness to support others and a true sense of camaraderie inside the gym. Alexis and Lindsay came to Cleveland for grad school last year from Buffalo, New York. They have been friends since sophomore year of undergrad after ending up dorm neighbors. After about a year of CrossFit Lindsay was finally able to nag Alexis into joining "the cult." They've been the dynamic weight slinging duo ever since! They both have been a ray of sunshine in our classes since arriving in Cleveland, with a little bit of bad ass butt kicker on the side. We hear they also make some fantastic cookies! How long have you been doing CrossFit? L: 2.5 years. A: Almost 2 years. What do you do when you're not at CSC? L: Go to class, stud...

New Years Resolution? Not for me.

It's the first week of January and that means one thing - gyms everywhere are about to meet a bunch of people motivated to conquer their new years resolutions.  Did you create one?  If you did, is your plan to lose weight, get stronger, get healthier, lower your markers and try and lessen the impact your diabetes is having on you?  Or, is it something ridiculous like try and clean 300 lbs when you're currently only cleaning 100 lbs? Whatever your goal, chances are you have made a resolution for 2017.  Well, screw your new years resolutions .  Yep, you read that right.  Screw your new years resolutions.  I realize this is a seemingly super negative point-of-view, and if you know me that should throw you off.  But... If you have a resolution for this year you probably had one for 2016 and 2015, and maybe even as far back as 2000.  Look back, give yourself an honest assessment and count how many times your resolution has been success...

CSC Sweatiest Angel - December 2016

Congratulations to Neil Ningard on winning CSC's last Sweatiest Angel award for 2016! The Sweatiest Angel award is given each month to a CSC member who displays significant work ethic, a willingness to support others and a true sense of camaraderie inside the gym.  Neil came to CSC like a lot of guys who enjoy lifting do - with a lot of upper body strength and in seek of some lower body conditioning.  Since joining CSC, Neil has increased his lower body strength significantly, his conditioning, mobility and range of motion significantly, and even increased his already impressive upper body strength with a 385 lb bench press and 235 lb strict press.  And the most impressive part is that he's done it with an awesome work ethic and a giant smile on his face.  Congrats Neil, we love having you as a member!     How long have you been doing CrossFit? (I've) been doing CrossFit ...

Congratulations to Christina Dunn on being named CrossFit Sixth City 's Sweatiest Angel for November!  The Sweatiest Angel award is awarded each month to the CSC athlete who displays significant work ethic, a willingness to support others and a true sense of camaraderie inside the gym. Christina busts her butt in the gym daily pushing through the task ahead of her and challenging all of her weaknesses.  She has continually increased all her lifts, added new tools to her skill set and always has more fun than anyone doing it.  She may also be the most consistent member in the gym.  We're almost guaranteed to see her at CSC at 5:30PM.  Congrats Ch ristina! How long have you been doing CrossFit? Two years   What do you do when you are not at CSC (hobbies, occupation, etc)? When I am not at CSC, I enjoy being outdoors (exploring new hiking areas, walking along the lakefront (except in the winter)), spending time with my family and friends, attendi...

Learn From The Coaches - Recipes

In our Learn From The Coaches series, our goal is to deliver information to you (the athlete) from the everyday lives of our coaches.  This will be information and insight that at one time or another all of our coaches at CrossFit Sixth City have given to our athletes, but will be re-enforced by the demonstration of our real life application.  Simply put - we do it as well and we will show you how. Today we're talking recipes for our coaches' favorite go-to meals.  We will give a brief description of each coach's diet, the recipe for their meal and how he/she likes to utilize it in their meal plan.  Coach A - Adam Daugherty My Diet is mostly Paleo (about 80 to 90%), except for a starch for dinner and some days breakfast as well.  The quality of my diet stems from my dietary needs as I have IBS.  The quantity of calories and macro nutrients is based off my needs for maintaining my current weight and receiving enough fuel for my athletic CrossFit g...

From The Eyes of a PT - Low Back

Low Back Pain and the Core In the first of our three part series “From The Eyes of a PT” with Stephanie Romich we discussed some common issues that people pursuing an elite level of fitness can run in to from time to time, specifically with their knees.  Here, in the second installment, we will be discussing low back pain (with or without occasional radiating pain into the butt/down the leg). There is a complex system of support that the lumbar (lower) spine must rely upon to ensure we are protecting the longevity of our athletic careers and keeping our spines healthy. Why do I have low back pain? There are a multitude of issues which can lead to low back pain (LBP) and the can vary based on whether the pain is becoming chronic or is still fairly new and acute.  Acute LBP refers to something that has appeared within the last 1-3 days and in an active/athletic population might be most closely related to heavy lifting with movements such as ...
