CSC Sweatiest Angel - April 2016

Congratulations to Jim Bollenbacher on winning CSC's Sweatiest Angel award for the month of April! The Sweatiest Angel award is given each month to a CSC member who displays significant work ethic, a willingness to support others and a true sense of camaraderie inside the gym.

Jim's as good a guy as they come.  Always hard working and supportive of his classmates.  A few months back Jim had to make the change from PM classes (which he had gone to for a couple years) to AM classes since he decided to purchase a home just outside of Cleveland.  As anyone who has made that change knows it can be a tough task.  But Jim has thrived both personally as an athlete and as an invaluable member of the AM community.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?
About 3.5 years.  I started at CLE [CrossFit CLE] and jumped right over to CSC [when coaches Adam and Jeff left to open CrossFit Sixth City].

What do you do when you are not at CSC?
I am a Crossfitter in the early morning, Headhunter (recruiter for Pharma and Biotech industry) by day and enjoy playing basketball, eating at Ginko and spending time with my family and friends in the evenings and the weekends.  I love to travel when I can.

When did you realize CrossFit was for you?
After my first couple of workouts.  I hadn't been pushed that hard since high school football.  The challenge, the competition, the commodore and opportunity to improve were everything I was looking for when it came to working out.

What is your favorite WOD/movement?
It has evolved over the years . . . at first it was Wall Balls (I'm tall) then dubs once I got half way decent at them (it took way too long).

What is your LEAST favorite WOD/movement?
Burpees just suck.

One thing you've done at CSC you never thought you would do?
Muscle-ups and 5:30am workouts.  Everyone at the early morning classes are great, even the misfits.

What motivates you during a WOD?
Not getting a disappointing look from JB.

What advice would you give someone just starting CrossFit?

Scale but push yourself and mobility every day.

From The Eyes of a PT - Knees

Introduction   Over the years, we CrossFit coaches have noticed many behavioral trends among our athletes. One of the most common trends we see involves their willingness to take to heart our opinions on building strength, increasing range of motion (mobility) or healthy eating.  We are often seen as experts in these fields thanks to thousands of hours of real world practice and learning.  However, one of the areas that we often get scoffed at is that of injuries, whether they are the nagging or serious variety.  We’ll be the first to admit that we are certainly no experts in this area of health and wellness as we have never received a sports medicine or physical therapy degree, nor practiced as a licensed physical therapist.  Having said that, through the years we have come to develop a pretty good instinct for when athletes are pushing too hard and entering the window of overuse injuries.  Unfortunately, our words of wisdom oft fall on deaf ears. ...
