From The Eyes of a PT - Low Back

Low Back Pain and the Core In the first of our three part series “From The Eyes of a PT” with Stephanie Romich we discussed some common issues that people pursuing an elite level of fitness can run in to from time to time, specifically with their knees.  Here, in the second installment, we will be discussing low back pain (with or without occasional radiating pain into the butt/down the leg). There is a complex system of support that the lumbar (lower) spine must rely upon to ensure we are protecting the longevity of our athletic careers and keeping our spines healthy. Why do I have low back pain? There are a multitude of issues which can lead to low back pain (LBP) and the can vary based on whether the pain is becoming chronic or is still fairly new and acute.  Acute LBP refers to something that has appeared within the last 1-3 days and in an active/athletic population might be most closely related to heavy lifting with movements such as a back sq

CSC Sweatiest Angel October 2016

Congratulations to Scott Duncan on winning CSC's Sweatiest Angel award for the month of October! The Sweatiest Angel award is given each month to a CSC member who displays significant work ethic, a willingness to support others and a true sense of camaraderie inside the gym.  Last month we tested our core lifts as part of the strength cycle retesting and gave members the option of competing in an in-house power lifting meet.  Meaning, they would find their 1 rep max back squat, bench press and deadlift all on the same day.  Scott PR'd all three of his lifts that day by more than 70 total pounds!  These kinds of GAINZ can't be accomplished by anyone who doesn't bust their butt every single day.  That's Scott. He consistently shows up, consistently works his butt off and consistently supports everyone else.  Congratulations Scott!   How long have you been doing CrossFit? On and off for about 2.5 years, but consistently for the past year sinc

CSC Sweatiest Angel September 2016

Congratulations to Chris Brewer on winning CSC's Sweatiest Angel award for the month of September! The Sweatiest Angel award is given each month to a CSC member who displays significant work ethic, a willingness to support others and a true sense of camaraderie inside the gym. If you ever happen to see Chris around the gym without a smile on his face, give it about 10 seconds.  Chris has come as far as anyone we have ever coached since the first day he set foot in CSC (he never lifted a weight before), and he has done it all with as much enjoyment as anyone we have ever seen.  He is one of our hardest workers and biggest cheerleaders for his teammates.  Congrats Chris!   How long have you been doing CrossFit? One year and six months. What do you do when you are not at CSC? I’m an accountant for Tri-C and when I’m not there, I’m usually eating Mitchell’s Ice Cream. When I’m not eating Mitchell’s, I’m hanging ou

CSC Sweatiest Angel August 2016

Congratulations to Nate Klein on winning CSC's Sweatiest Angel award for the month of July! The Sweatiest Angel award is given each month to a CSC member who displays significant work ethic, a willingness to support others and a true sense of camaraderie inside the gym.  Oh, what can we say about Nate? We think everyone at CSC will agree that he meets all of the qualifications listed above for Sweatiest Angel.  He's been almost everything one can be in the fitness realm - an overweight newbie, an over-worker who works out way too much, a regional athlete, a distance runner and your regular every day CrossFitter.  Through his experiences he has gained a valuable perspective that is hard to come by these days in many sense - a realistic and positive view of one's fitness journey (and an incredibly sarcastic sense of humor, as you will read below).  Nate is the kind of guy that every gym, or even every community needs.  Someone that is capable of worki

CSC Sweatiest Angel July 2016

Congratulations to Dustin Lato on winning CSC's Sweatiest Angel award for the month of July! The Sweatiest Angel award is given each month to a CSC member who displays significant work ethic, a willingness to support others and a true sense of camaraderie inside the gym.     Dustin is a constant supporter of other members as well as an exceptionally hard worker. At one point Dustin had a streak of 3 months with at least 6 PRs! Congratulations Dustin!   How long have you been doing CrossFit? Started in January 2016 so about 7 months. Tried a free class at a different gym a few years ago, but wasn’t my cup of tea.   What do you do when you are not at CSC (hobbies, occupation, etc)? I work a lot. I’ve got my own software business and part owner of 4 other ventures (apparel, sport software, vaporizer, and startup non-profit), freelance graphic/web designer on the side. I love what I do so it’s not really work for me. I also mountain bike a bit (when I’m f
