Sweatiest Angels - January 2017

Congratulations to our dynamic duo, the cool kids of Buffalo, Alexis Derrigo and Lindsay Ponto on being named CSC's Sweatiest Angels! The Sweatiest Angel award is given each month to the CSC athlete who displays significant work ethic, a willingness to support others and a true sense of camaraderie inside the gym.

Alexis and Lindsay came to Cleveland for grad school last year from Buffalo, New York. They have been friends since sophomore year of undergrad after ending up dorm neighbors. After about a year of CrossFit Lindsay was finally able to nag Alexis into joining "the cult." They've been the dynamic weight slinging duo ever since!

They both have been a ray of sunshine in our classes since arriving in Cleveland, with a little bit of bad ass butt kicker on the side. We hear they also make some fantastic cookies!

How long have you been doing CrossFit?
L: 2.5 years.
A: Almost 2 years.

What do you do when you're not at CSC?
L: Go to class, study, play with Bentley and I love cooking.
A: I work at Cleveland Urology full-time, snuggle with my puppy and I like baking.

What is your favorite WOD/movement?
L: Hang power clean
A: Back squat

What is your least favorite WOD/movement?
Both: Thrusters!

When did you come to find CrossFit and realize it was for you?
L: My cousin introduced me to it and I liked that it was different every day, and actually saw progress while doing it. I tend to get bored easily.
A: Lindsay nagged me to try it out so I finally gave in. I liked the people there and the atmosphere while you worked out.

What were your expectations when you started CrossFit?
L: I wanted to learn all of the movements and excel since I am competitive.
A: I wanted to get in all around better health.

What are your goals for CrossFit?
L: I want to work on my HSPU and muscle-up to make it more fluid.
A: To be stronger, healthier and stronger.

What has your experience been with CrossFit?
L: It's been good for the most part. A few ups and downs that have set me back, but working toward getting better.
A: It's been great to be around such a positive and supportive community that has similar values.

One thing you've done at CSC you never thought you would do?
L: Compete in a team comp and place and win money.
A: Pull-ups

What advice would you give someone just starting CrossFit?
Both: Don't get frustrated if you can't do something, everything is scalable.

From The Eyes of a PT - Knees

Introduction   Over the years, we CrossFit coaches have noticed many behavioral trends among our athletes. One of the most common trends we see involves their willingness to take to heart our opinions on building strength, increasing range of motion (mobility) or healthy eating.  We are often seen as experts in these fields thanks to thousands of hours of real world practice and learning.  However, one of the areas that we often get scoffed at is that of injuries, whether they are the nagging or serious variety.  We’ll be the first to admit that we are certainly no experts in this area of health and wellness as we have never received a sports medicine or physical therapy degree, nor practiced as a licensed physical therapist.  Having said that, through the years we have come to develop a pretty good instinct for when athletes are pushing too hard and entering the window of overuse injuries.  Unfortunately, our words of wisdom oft fall on deaf ears. ...
