Sweatiest Angel - Jennifer Colvin

Congratulations to our Sweatiest Angel for the month of July - Jennifer Colvin!

The Sweatiest Angel award is given each month to the Sixth City athlete who displays significant work ethic, a willingness to support others, and a true sense of team camaraderie inside the gym.

Jen is a real inspiration - CrossFitter, new mother, runner, swimmer and doctor! Recently Jen worked with the coaches to continue doing CrossFit group classes all the way up to the day before giving birth to her baby boy, RJ. Not only was she able to stay active, but even continued to get stronger including a clean PR just 24 hours before giving birth. Since then, she has continued to be completely awesome - balancing a career as a doctor, being a mother and growing as an athlete not only in the gym (5 pull-up PR) but as a runner as well.

Congratulations Jen, we're extremely proud of you and how hard you work each day!

(Jen + RJ)
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
Jen: Two years.

What do you do when you're not at Sixth City?
Jen: When I'm not at the hospital, hobbies include running, Pinterest projects, and playing with baby RJ.

What is your favorite WOD/Movement?
Jen: Wall balls and running (Jendurance).

What is your least favorite WOD/Movement?
Jen: Overhead squats or snatches.

When did you come to find CrossFit and realize it was for you?
Jen: Very soon after I started. I loved the group atmosphere and the coaching. I found that I was burnt out trying to workout on my own and and CrossFit changed that.

What were your expectations when you started CrossFit?
Jen: I was a little intimidated when I first started. But I quickly realized how easy it is to scale things and make it work.

What are your goals for CrossFit?
Jen: Recently, I've been focusing on toes to bars and pull-ups. I've really struggled with these movements in the past so I've been making an effort to practice these after the WOD.

What has your experience been with CrossFit?
Jen: It has changed my relationship with exercise and fitness. I had fallen into a routine where I was more focused on weight loss. With CrossFit, I've been able to focus more on what I can accomplish and pushing myself to do more/lift more.

What is one thing you have done at Sixth City that you never thought you would do?
Jen: I was shocked at how much I was still able to do during my pregnancy. I was worried that any gains I had made with regards to fitness would be completely erased by pregnancy. But I was able to keep working out up until the day before delivery and was able to do much more than I expected.

What advice would you give someone just starting CrossFit?
Jen: Know that everything is able to be scaled. You can make CrossFit work for you.

From The Eyes of a PT - Knees

Introduction   Over the years, we CrossFit coaches have noticed many behavioral trends among our athletes. One of the most common trends we see involves their willingness to take to heart our opinions on building strength, increasing range of motion (mobility) or healthy eating.  We are often seen as experts in these fields thanks to thousands of hours of real world practice and learning.  However, one of the areas that we often get scoffed at is that of injuries, whether they are the nagging or serious variety.  We’ll be the first to admit that we are certainly no experts in this area of health and wellness as we have never received a sports medicine or physical therapy degree, nor practiced as a licensed physical therapist.  Having said that, through the years we have come to develop a pretty good instinct for when athletes are pushing too hard and entering the window of overuse injuries.  Unfortunately, our words of wisdom oft fall on deaf ears. ...
